《Smoke on the Water》不僅是Deep Purple（深紫樂隊）最有名的歌曲，而且也是最著名的搖滾歌曲之一。簡單而抓耳的吉他節奏，令其深受樂迷喜愛。
在2004年，滾石雜志評出的“曆史上最偉大的500首歌曲”中，《Smoke on the Water》位列第434位。
而歌曲來源于樂隊經曆的一場真實事故：
話說在發行《Fireball》之後，深紫獲得了巨大的成功，他們成爲了英國最火熱的樂隊之一。而由于之前兩張專輯都是在巡演過程中錄制的，他們覺得現場演出的效果，比在錄音室裏要來得好。于是，樂隊打算租用一個空曠的，類似舞台的場地來錄制新專輯。
1971年12月，樂隊最終選定了瑞士的蒙特勒賭場，還租用了滾石樂隊的移動錄音室。就在演出歌曲《King Kong》的時候，一個觀衆用信號槍，對著木質的屋頂開槍，隨即點燃了屋頂。火越燒越大，場面也開始變得混亂。
由于人群擁擠，很多觀衆都遭到推聳，樂隊主唱Frank Zappa也因此受傷，坐了整整一年的輪椅。就在大家成功逃出後不久，火焰竄到了中央供暖系統，並引起大爆炸，整個賭場都被炸成廢墟。萬幸的是，雖然有很多輕傷的傷員，但沒有人因火災離世。
後來的一天，剛起床的貝斯手Roger Glover毫無征兆地大聲喊了一句“Smoke on the water！”。而主唱Ian Gilan聽到這句話，突然來了靈感，于是把事故的經曆寫成了歌詞，這就是後來的《Smoke on the Water》。
